Breastfeeding,
Bacteria & Digestion:
The typical adult body harbors about 100 trillion bacterial cells from at least
500 species - 10 times the number of human cells. And that's not counting
viruses and fungi. Most of these bacterial organisms are what medicine calls
"friendly," or at least harmless. Friendly bacteria, or probiotics, serve a host
of biological functions important to the survival of the host they populate.
Some aid in digestion, some compete to keep harmful bacteria in check, some
stimulate the immune system, and there are roles not yet known. The human
digestive tract is sterile at birth but rapidly acquires organisms. The first
ones to established dominate the system. Nowadays, many infants are first
colonized by organisms acquired in the hospital, rather than the beneficial
bacteria, Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, which predominate when babies were
born at home. Breast-feeding introduces beneficial bacteria, which may account
for the lower incidence of allergies in breast-fed babies.
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute has reported that
breast feeding offers some protection against childhood diseases (leukemia). This study
involved 2,200 children and contradicts some previous smaller studies that
reported no correlation. This work found a 30% reduction for babies breastfed
for at least six months. The effect is thought to be due to immunological
factors transmitted in the mother’s milk. Moto of the story is to breast feed
your babies no matter where they are born.
Take
A Heart Disease Test. See if you pass. Do you smoke? Are you overweight? Do you get 30
minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each day? Do you drink only one
alcoholic beverage every three days? Do you eat lots of fruits and veggies? If
you said no, no, yes, yes, yes, congratulations-you are in the top 1% of Humans.
These little requirements will help reduce your chances of suffering from heart
disease by 82%. This conclusion is drawn from data obtained from 84,000 women
participating in the Harvard Nurses Study from 1980 to 1994 and also translates
to similar benefits to men.
Little
Twinges - Concerned?: Often times we hear patients say, “oh yeah, I did feel
out-of-sorts or a little twinge couple of days ago.” They passed the time
for their check-up! Waiting still longer can lead to bigger and disabling
flare-ups. End result is being unhappy about not enjoying a fun trip or a golf
outing. So don’t let something be or stay out-of-place. A quick maintenance
checkup and adjustment now can help prevent those bigger flare-ups. Call today!
Alzheimer's
Prevention Needed! Yahoo News reported 9/9/04 that the number of
Alzheimer's disease cases in the United States will at least double by the year
2030, unless Americans make vital lifestyle changes now. This disease causes
the gradual deterioration of brain cells, causing sufferers to lose memory
functions. Researchers estimate there are about 3 million Alzheimer's patients
in 2004, with the possibility of that number reaching at least 6 million in
about 25 years. Alzheimer's groups argue that 4.5 million currently are
afflicted, and by 2050, the number of individuals with the brain-debilitating
disease could reach 16 million. As the number of cases increases, so will the
costs of caring for Alzheimer's patients. Researchers approximate that the
disease will cost, using 1998 dollars, about $100,000 per year for each
patient.
Despite the disturbing predictions, researchers say that simple lifestyle changes can dramatically alter the outlook. They suggest:
In one study, researchers evenly split 20 participants into two groups. One set of individuals was put on a special program, which included mental and physical exercise, stress reduction and smart food choices. The other group served as a control group and did not follow the plan.
A typical day for group one participants began with stretching, a healthy breakfast, walking and practicing memory skills. By the end of two weeks, 75 percent of participants on the program showed at least a 20 percent improvement on memory tests. As an added bonus, the program seemed to lower their blood pressures, which is linked to brain health.
Researchers claim that if Americans make any one of the lifestyle changes, the projection of Alzheimer's cases could drop by 1 million in five years, and possibly by 2.5 million in 20 years.

DOCTOR’S
CORNER: Greatest Stretch Ever– Even when we get regular spinal
checkups episodes of pain reoccurs without supposedly no cause. Those who stay
alert to their body functions take heed and seek out the cause. Once realigned again it is extremely
important to prevent muscles from shortening, which leads to being pulled out of
alignment again. One fantastic way to prevent this would be to stretch the legs
by bending over
with one leg crossed over the other and reaching for your toes while supporting
yourself with the front leg side hand on a structure. If this give pain then one
needs to just bend at the hips while keeping the chest out and not bend the
low back. Holding this stretch for 20 seconds and then doing each leg 3 times
alternately does is a superb way of preventing misalignments of your low
back. Let's face it, prevention is best!
